The part nobody plans for

People budget time for packing. Almost nobody budgets time for unpacking — and it’s the part that drags on for months. A three-bedroom home can easily arrive as dozens of boxes, and every one has to be opened, emptied and put somewhere it belongs. That last part is slow, because it involves a decision on nearly every item.

You don’t need to have used a packer to book unpacking. Many people move with a national van line or on their own, then bring in help for the setup.

What a full unpack should cover

  • Every box opened and emptied — not just stacked in the right room
  • Kitchen set up first: cabinets and drawers organized, appliances placed
  • Closets hung, drawers filled, shoes racked
  • Beds assembled if needed and made up
  • Bathrooms, linens and medicine cabinet
  • Books shelved, décor placed, TVs set up
  • Artwork and mirrors hung where you want them
  • Every box flattened and all packing paper removed

Scope varies by provider — confirm exactly which of these are included, especially box and debris removal. Bulk trash pickup runs on a schedule in many West Valley neighborhoods, so a garage full of cardboard can sit there for weeks.

Who books unpacking only

  • People who moved with a national van line. The truck delivers and leaves.
  • People who moved themselves and have run out of energy for the last mile.
  • Seniors and anyone with a physical limitation — unpacking is hours of bending, reaching and lifting.
  • Families relocating for work with a start date that doesn’t leave a weekend free.
  • Snowbirds returning in the fall who want the house usable when they land.

Questions to ask providers

  • Will you put things where I want them, and check with me on anything unclear?
  • Is box and paper removal included?
  • Can you do just the kitchen and bedrooms?
  • How is the time estimated — by box count, by room, or after a walkthrough?

Unpacking — questions

How long does unpacking take?

It depends on how many boxes there are and how many decisions they involve. As a rough rule, unpacking often takes somewhat less time than packing the same home.

What does unpacking cost?

Most providers charge by the hour per person. See packing costs for rough planning figures.

Can I get a partial unpack?

Often, yes — kitchen and bedrooms first so the house is livable, and the rest at your own pace.

Can I book unpacking without packing?

Yes. Choose “Unpacking only” on the quote form.
