The short answer

Most packing providers in the Phoenix area charge by the hour, per packer, plus materials — either included in the rate or billed separately. The final number depends mostly on how full your home is, how much is fragile, stairs and access, and timing. West Valley Packing and Unpacking is a referral service and doesn’t set prices; the figures below are rough planning ranges to help you budget, not quotes.

Rough planning ranges by home size

Home sizeTypical crewTypical hoursRough planning range
Studio / 1 bed23–4$550–$900
2 bedroom25–6$850–$1,350
3 bedroom26–8$1,150–$1,900
4+ bedroom38–10$1,900–$3,200
Not quotes. Each independent provider sets its own prices. Two-storey homes, full garages and heavy fragile volume usually add time. Always get a written estimate.

What actually drives the number

FactorWhy it matters
Density of contentsThe biggest factor. A crowded home lived in for decades can take longer than a larger, sparser new build.
Fragile volumeFilling a dish pack properly takes far longer than a carton of linens.
Garage, Arizona room, shedsOften the densest spaces in a West Valley home — and the most often missing from phone quotes.
Stairs and accessTwo-storey homes, gated communities and elevator bookings all add time.
Sorting during the packIf decisions are being made as you go, the pack runs at the speed of those decisions.
Square footageUsually the weakest predictor on its own.

Five ways a cheap quote becomes an expensive invoice

If you’re comparing providers, these are the places the gap usually hides. Ask each one directly:

  1. Materials billed separately. Are cartons, dish packs, wardrobe boxes, paper and tape in the rate, or on the invoice?
  2. An “estimate” that’s really an opening number. Is the range binding? What happens if the job runs over? Get the answer in writing.
  3. Fragile handling as a separate fee. What does a china cabinet cost on top?
  4. Travel, fuel and stair fees. Rarely mentioned on the phone, sometimes on the invoice.
  5. Crew size. How many people, and why that number for your home?

Is it cheaper to pack yourself?

Usually yes on cash, often no on everything else.

Pack it yourselfHire a provider

Your timeMany hours, often spread over weeks of eveningsA walkthrough and a final check
CalendarSeveral weekendsOften one day for a typical home

The middle path suits many people: pack the easy rooms yourself and hand over the kitchen, the fragiles and the garage. See partial packing.

How to spend less without buying a worse job

  • Purge before the crew arrives, not during. Every item you’ve already decided against is one you’d otherwise pay to pack.
  • Hand over the slow rooms only — kitchen, fragiles, garage.
  • Book off-peak if your date allows. Summer usually has more availability.
  • Have the new place ready before an unpack — shelf liner down, furniture placed.
  • Don’t skip dish packs or reuse weak boxes for heavy items — both cost more than they save.

Packing cost — questions

Do providers charge by the hour or by the job?

Most charge by the hour. Ask for a written range based on a walkthrough, and what happens if the job runs over.

Is there usually a deposit?

It varies by provider. Ask about deposit, rescheduling and cancellation terms before booking.

Does unpacking cost the same as packing?

It varies. Some providers charge less per hour for unpacking. Ask whether box and paper removal is included.

Is packing cheaper in summer?

Rates vary by provider, but summer usually has better availability in the Phoenix area.

Does requesting a quote cost anything?

No. It’s free, with no obligation. Request a quote.
