Does a Packing Service Include Unpacking?
No — packing and unpacking are quoted separately, and either can be booked alone. Unpacking often takes somewhat less time than packing the same home.

No. Packing and unpacking are quoted and booked separately, and either can be booked on its own. Rates vary by provider — see packing costs for rough planning ranges, and ask whether box and paper removal is included. Most companies quote packing only unless you ask — so if you assumed it was included, check your estimate now rather than on moving day.
Why they are priced separately
They are different jobs with different skills and different speeds. Packing is a technique problem — how a plate is wrapped, whether a box is filled, which carton a book goes in. Unpacking is a decision problem: where does this live in a house you have not organised yet.
Unpacking is priced lower because it is less technical and physically lighter. It is not faster, though. It runs roughly 60–70% of the packing hours, because deciding where a hundred objects belong takes longer than boxing them did.
What a full unpacking service actually includes
- Boxes emptied and contents placed where you want them — not stacked on a counter for you to deal with.
- Kitchen set up first by default, because a working kitchen is what makes a house liveable.
- Fragiles unwrapped and positioned, collections replaced shelf by shelf in the order they were boxed.
- Beds made, if you ask. It costs minutes and changes the first night.
- Every box, sheet of paper and scrap of cardboard removed the same day — not left in the garage “for recycling”.
What it does not include: cleaning, hanging pictures, assembling furniture or connecting appliances. Those are specialist jobs — ask the provider who they recommend.
The question behind the question
People usually ask this because they are trying to work out whether their quote is complete. Three things worth checking on any estimate, ours included:
- Does the number cover packing only, or both ends? If the word “unpack” does not appear, assume it is not in there.
- Are materials included or billed separately? An $1,100 job with $280 of boxes on top is a $1,380 job.
- Is the garage counted? The most common omission in this market, and worth two to four hours.
A good estimate states scope room by room, so you can see exactly what was counted. Full breakdown on the cost page.
Should you book both?
If you can only afford one, book the unpack. That is the opposite of what most companies will tell you, and here is the reasoning: packing yourself is tedious but it happens while your life is still functioning. Unpacking happens when you are exhausted, in an unfamiliar house, usually with work restarting on Monday. It is the half people abandon.
The other argument for booking both is continuity — the crew that packed you knows the labelling system, which measurably speeds up the far end. Booking both in one call also locks the second date before the calendar fills.
