A good estimate depends on what the provider can see. These details help them give you a realistic number:
- Your dates — closing, move-out, the movers’ date, and anything that can’t move.
- How full the home is — two homes of the same size can take very different amounts of time.
- The easy-to-forget spaces — garage, Arizona room, golf cart garage, sheds, lofts and storage units.
- Fragile and valuable items — china, glass, art, mirrors, TVs and collections.
- Access — stairs, gated or 55+ community rules, and parking or elevator bookings.
- What isn’t going — items being sold, donated or discarded don’t need packing.

Can I get an estimate over the phone or by video?
Many providers can give a rough idea by phone and a firmer estimate after an in-person or video walkthrough. Ask the provider what their estimate is based on and whether it’s in writing.
What if I’m out of state?
Say so in the notes. Many providers can work from a video walkthrough and photos when family is handling a move remotely.
How quickly will I hear back?
It depends on the provider and the season. If your date is urgent, put it in the form so providers know.
