What’s realistic in one day
There’s a real limit to what a crew can finish in a day, and it depends more on how full the home is than on bedroom count. A small home is usually comfortable; a larger or very full home may need a bigger crew or two days; a full garage often means planning for two days.
If it won’t fit, the two options that actually work are a bigger crew, or a partial pack where the provider takes the slow rooms and you take the simple ones.

Common last-minute situations
- The closing moved up. Escrow accelerates and six weeks of plan becomes nine days.
- The packing didn’t happen. Three weekends were planned and life intervened.
- Something went wrong. Illness, a family emergency, a job transfer, a rental that fell through.
Put your date and situation in the notes on the quote form so providers can tell you quickly whether they can help.
How to make a rush job go well
| Before the crew arrives | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Clear the floors | Walkways and one staging area save real time. |
| Pull out the keep-outs | Medication, chargers, documents, passports — one box, one counter. |
| Decide the discards | Anything not coming goes to the garage so it isn’t packed. |
| Point, don’t sort | Sorting alongside the crew is a big time cost on a rush job. |
And leave the kitchen to the professionals — it’s the slowest room, and a half-packed kitchen can take longer to finish than to start fresh.
What shouldn’t change in a rush
- Boxes should still be properly filled — a rushed, under-filled dish box is an expensive shortcut.
- Labeling should still happen — an unlabeled fast pack costs you the time back at the other end.
- Hazardous items — paint, propane, ammunition, pool chemicals — still can’t be packed.
- You should still get the price in writing before work starts.
Ask every provider whether they charge a rush or after-hours premium.
Last-minute packing — questions
Can a provider come today?
Sometimes, depending on the provider and the day. Request early and put your date in the form.
Is there a rush fee?
Some providers charge one and some don’t. Ask before you book.
Do packers also move the boxes?
Usually not. On a same-day job, book your movers first — they’re often the harder booking.
What if the crew can’t finish?
Ask the provider to prioritize the rooms that must be done, and agree what waits.
