This isn’t a faster version of a normal pack
A regular move is logistics. Downsizing is different. Many West Valley downsizing moves involve someone leaving a house they’ve lived in for decades, and the constraint is rarely the boxes:
- Every object carries a decision — in a standard pack most things come; here, often half don’t.
- Volume has to shrink, sometimes dramatically: a family home into a villa or a single room in assisted living.
- Family is often out of state and needs to see what’s happening.
- The timeline is often set by someone else — a closing, a bed becoming available, a hospital discharge.
- The person may be tired, unwell or grieving. Pace matters.
Look for a provider who prices by the hour and doesn’t push, and who will stop when the day needs to stop.

A sorting method that saves time
Sorting on the fly is what turns a two-day job into a four-day one. A method many organizers use: set up four destinations before a box is opened, and send everything to one of them the first time it’s touched.
| Destination | What happens |
|---|---|
| Comes with you | Packed and labeled by room in the new home. |
| Goes to family | Boxed per person, labeled with their name. |
| Donated or sold | Staged in one place with a written list. |
| Discarded | Kept visible until the end of the day so decisions can be reversed. |
Keeping the discard pile visible sounds minor. It isn’t — people decide faster when they know a decision isn’t final yet.
Planning by destination
| Moving to | What realistically comes |
|---|---|
| Smaller home or villa | Most furniture, part of the kitchen, some of the garage |
| Independent living apartment | A bedroom, one seating area, a small kitchen set |
| Assisted living room | Bed, chair, dresser, TV, photographs, a small keepsake set |
| Memory care | Familiar bedding, framed photographs, a very small set |
| Out of state, to family | Whatever ships sensibly — usually less than expected |
Keeping out-of-state family in the loop
- Ask for photos of each room before and after.
- Ask for a written inventory by carton, sent as a file.
- Ask for photos of the donate and sell pile before anything leaves.
- Ask for one named contact for the whole job.
For estates, ask providers to work from a written list of who receives what, and to pack nothing until the family agrees the list. Where probate is involved, instructions should come from the executor in writing.
Senior downsizing — questions
Can it be spread over several days?
Yes, and for many people it should be. Ask providers about shorter days and the same crew each day.
Can the same provider unpack at the new place?
Often. With downsizing, walking into a room that’s already set up makes a real difference.
Do providers handle donations?
Many will stage and list donations; the charity usually collects. Ask what’s included.
What about 55+ community access?
Mention the community on the quote form. Sun City, Sun City West and others have their own contractor procedures.
