Why fragile items break

People picture a dropped box. In practice, a lot of breakage starts before the truck moves: a carton that isn’t filled, so contents shift on every corner; a standard box used where a double-walled dish pack was needed; fragile cartons stacked under heavy ones; or a poor wrap on the item itself.

The lesson is unglamorous: a properly filled carton can’t move, so nothing inside it can hit anything else. If you tilt a sealed dish box and hear anything shift, it isn’t finished.

How good providers pack it, item by item

ItemWhat to expect
Plates and bowlsOn edge, never flat. Dish pack with cell dividers, unprinted paper against the glaze.
StemwareIndividually wrapped, stems supported, upright in a divided cell.
Figurines and collectionsWrapped individually and boxed by shelf, so they go back in order.
Framed art and mirrorsCorner protectors, glass taped, mirror carton sized to the frame, travels on edge.
Lamps and shadesBase and shade separated; shades in their own carton, never carrying weight.
Marble, stone and glass topsEdge-protected, always vertical, crated if large.
Vinyl recordsVertical, snug, never flat-stacked, never left in a hot vehicle.

Unprinted paper matters: newsprint ink can transfer onto glaze, gilt and unglazed ceramic.

When it needs a crate, not a carton

  • Glass or stone table tops over roughly three feet across
  • Original art of real value, or anything on an insurance schedule
  • Large or antique mirrors
  • Chandeliers and multi-arm fixtures
  • Anything already cracked or repaired

Ask for crating to be quoted separately, in writing, before it’s built.

The Phoenix problem: heat

Between May and September a closed West Valley garage or parked truck can get extremely hot, and several categories of “fragile” are heat-fragile rather than impact-fragile: candles, vinyl, photographs and slides, electronics, medication and cosmetics, and wax-sealed bottles. Ask providers how they handle these on summer jobs — packed last, loaded last, and kept out of hot garages and trucks.

Fragile packing — questions

Can I book fragile packing only?

Often, yes — it’s a common partial booking. See partial packing.

Will a provider check boxes I packed myself?

Many will if asked. It’s worth it — under-filled cartons are a common problem.

What about insurance?

Ask the provider what coverage they carry and how claims work, and tell them about any high-value items before the day.

Do packers move the items too?

Usually not — packers pack, movers drive. Brief your movers on which cartons must stay on edge.
