Eight weeks is the right runway for a Phoenix move, and the reason is booking lead times rather than packing time. February to May, packers and movers book five to six weeks out. Generic national checklists say four weeks, which in this market means you are already late. This one is built around the Valley’s calendar.
8 weeks out — book before you sort
- Book movers and packers now. Counter-intuitive, but capacity is the scarce thing, not your readiness. You can cancel without penalty; you cannot conjure a crew in April.
- Start the purge. Everything you decide against now is something you do not pack, move, or rehome later. Biggest single saving available and it is free.
- Confirm dates that are not yours — closing, lease end, school start, HOA or community access rules.
- Photograph anything valuable in its current condition.
6 weeks out
- Order or start collecting materials. Buy in two rounds — everyone over-buys the first time. Box counts here.
- Book lifts and loading docks if any building requires a reservation.
- Request certificates of insurance from every vendor — many buildings will not let anyone in without one.
- Arrange gate or community access in advance if you are in a 55+ or gated community.
- Start using up the freezer and the pantry.
4 weeks out
- Pack the rarely used: formal china, seasonal decorations, out-of-season clothing, the garage shelf nobody touches.
- Book the unpack for the day after the truck if you want one — it is the half people abandon.
- Change of address: postal service, bank, insurer, licence, doctor, subscriptions.
- Arrange utility transfers for both properties.
- If moving in June–September, confirm a 5:00am start with every vendor.
2 weeks out
- Pack everything except a two-week living set.
- Do the garage now, not last. It is denser than you think and hotter than you want. Summer protocol.
- Confirm all bookings in writing — date, arrival time, crew size, the quoted range.
- Dispose of hazardous items locally: paint, propane, aerosols, pool chemicals, ammunition. Nobody will move these.
- Arrange care for children and pets on the day.
1 week out
- Run the pantry down. Give away or bin anything open, heavy or low value.
- Defrost the freezer 24–48 hours ahead and leave doors propped.
- Pack the OPEN FIRST box — kettle, mugs, knife, board, soap, cloth, kitchen roll, bin bags, two plates, cutlery. It travels in your car.
- Assemble the do-not-pack zone: medication, documents, passports, chargers, jewellery, valuables.
- Confirm parking or dock access for the truck.
2 days out, and the morning itself
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 2 days out | Bulk of the kitchen packed, minimal working set left out. Beds still made. |
| Day before | Packers come. Whole house packed except the working set and the do-not-pack zone. |
| Night before | Charge phones. Water and snacks ready. Cash for anyone you want to tip. |
| Morning of | Working set and bedding packed last. Strip beds. Do-not-pack items into your car first. |
| During | Walk each room with the crew as it finishes. Question anything before it is sealed. |
| Before leaving | Final walkthrough — every cupboard, the loft, the shed, behind doors. Photograph the empty rooms. |
| Day after | Unpack. Kitchen first, beds made, every box removed the same day. |
The sequence that works: pack the day before, move the day after, unpack the day after that. Same-day packing and loading sounds efficient and creates a bottleneck — the truck waits or the pack gets rushed.
Phoenix-specific items no national checklist has
- Book five to six weeks out February–May, four to five September–November. Two to three in winter; often same week June–August.
- Confirm 5:00am starts in summer. The difference between finishing the carry at 11am and 2pm is the whole day.
- Separate the heat-sensitive — candles, vinyl, photographs, electronics, medication, cosmetics, wine. These travel in your car.
- Never leave a loaded truck overnight in summer.
- Count the garage and the Arizona room as rooms when estimating anything.
- If you are a snowbird or in a 55+ community, avoid the first three weeks of April and November — the whole Valley is moving.
Cost planning: packing cost in Phoenix. Deciding whether to hire: DIY vs professional.
