A three-bedroom house takes two to three professional packers six to eight hours — one working day. The same house takes a homeowner 25 to 35 hours, usually spread across three to six weekends. The gap is not effort, it is repetition: a trained packer has wrapped ten thousand plates. Below, the timings by home size and the five things that change them.
Professional timings by home size
Packer-hours are the useful unit, not elapsed time. Fourteen packer-hours is two people for seven hours or three people for a bit under five. More crew shortens the day; it does not change the total.
Where the hours actually go
That distribution is why partial packing works: hand over the top two rows and you remove roughly half the hours. See partial packing.
The five things that change the number
- Density. The biggest factor by far, and mostly a function of how long you have lived there. Ten years plus adds 15–25%.
- Fragile volume. A dish pack takes roughly four times as long to fill properly as a carton of linens. Three china services can add half a day.
- The garage. Two to four hours on its own, and the item most often missing from a phone quote.
- Stairs. 20–30% on a two-storey home. Every carton is carried down.
- Sorting during the pack. If you are deciding what to keep while the crew works, the pack runs at the speed of your decisions. Legitimate — and it should be priced deliberately rather than discovered at 4pm.
Square footage is not on that list. It is the weakest predictor of packing time, which is why a walkthrough beats a quote from a bedroom count.
How long it takes if you do it yourself
25 to 35 hours for a three-bedroom, and the honest planning advice is to double whatever you first estimate. Almost everyone underestimates the kitchen, and almost everyone forgets the garage entirely.
Work backwards from your date: at four hours per weekend day, thirty hours is roughly four full weekend days, which means starting at least four weekends out with nothing else claiming those days. If that is not realistic, either start earlier or hand over the slow rooms. Full comparison on DIY vs professional packing.
Related questions
Can a house be packed in one day?
Up to three bedrooms, yes, comfortably. Four bedrooms is tight and often better as two days. Any home with a full garage should be planned as two.
Does a bigger crew finish faster?
It shortens the day but not the total hours, and past a point extra people get in each other’s way. Ask the provider how they sized the crew, and why.
How long does unpacking take?
About 60–70% of the packing hours — five to seven hours for a three-bedroom.
How long before the move should packing happen?
The day before the truck. Same-day packing and loading creates a bottleneck.
What if it takes longer than estimated?
Ask what happens if the provider misjudged the scope. If the scope genuinely changes, you should hear about it before extra hours are worked.
